Ratnagiri City
Ratnagiri is located at 16.98°N 73.3°E. It has an average elevation of 11 meters (36 feet). The Sahyadri mountains border Ratnagiri to the east. Heavy rainfall from mansoon results in a highly eroded landscape in the coastal region, but fertile alluvial valleys in the region produce abundant rice, coconuts, cashew nuts, and fruits, "Hapus" (Alphonso) mangoes being one of the main fruits. Fishing is an important industry in Ratnagiri.
According to 2011 census of India,Ratnagiri Town had a population of 76,239, males and females constituting 55% and 45%, respectively, of the population. 86% of males and 87% of females were literate. 11% of Ratnagiri's population was under 6 years of age. Considering the Urban Agglomeration of Ratnagiri, which includes the suburbs like Nachane, Kuwarbav, Mirjole, Khedshi, Bhatye, Shirgaon, Mirya, Majgaon; the population is around 1,25,000. With the increasing industrialization and trade in Ratnagiri, the population of the city is increasing.
Ratnadurg fort
Surrounded by Arabian sea on three sides, Ratnadurg fort is a structure in a form of horseshoe as wide as 1000 meters and as long as 1300 meters. It is spread over 120 acres and was once a strong hold of the Maratha empire later to be occupied by Mughals.
It gives you a splendid view of the sunset and Arabian sea with the shore waves screeching in your ears making it a memorable trip far from the city hustle.
A splendid temple, Bhagwati Mandir located inside the Ratnadurg fort is an ancient architectural marvel.A visit here is divine and the positive energy of this place can be experienced by those living around.
Ganpatipule
Ganapatipule is about 25 km from Ratnagiri and around 375 km from Mumbai. The waters of Ganapatipule are crystal clear and pristine. The entire stretch of beach is covered with fresh greeneries. The roadside sceneries on the way to Ganapatipule are captivating with narrow roads, red soil, roofed houses, clean courtyards, innumerable fruit bearing trees and casuarinas lining.
Ganapatipule is regarded as one of the most the important beaches of Maharashtra. Fine, sifted, silver sands, a gentle lapping sea, which soothes frayed nerves, attracts large number of tourists are the features of this beautiful beach. It is regarded as a beautiful seaside resort of today-especially for families in Maharashtra.
Panval Bridge
Panval Nadi viaduct is a 424 m long railway bridge for a single line of broad gauge track, at Ratnagiri in Maharashtra. The bridge superstructure comprises a single-cell, continuous pre-stressed concrete box girder with nine intermediate 40m spans and two end spans of 30 m each. The sub-structure consists of hollow octagonal reinforced concrete piers resting on open foundations. The tallest of the piers is about 64 m above bed level, which makes Panval Nadi Viaduct the second tallest bridge in Asia. The abutments are spill through.
The bridge was cast in 20 m segments at one end under a covered casting yard. The construction of the pre-stressed box girder was the first use of the incremental launching technique in India
The Thiba Palace
The Thiba Palace was built in 1910-11 for the 1911-16 stay there in exile of the king and the queen of Burma (Myanmar). The place has tombs of the royal couple. The Government Polytechnic Ratnagiri functioned from Thiba palace, for a few years, it has subsequently shifted to its own premises. .
Bhatye Beach
The Bhatye beach is a lovely, long stretch of a clean beach ideal for a relaxing holiday. Bhatye, a small village close to Ratnagiri city is popular for its generous flat sea showers. The length of the beach is 1.5 kms and it is flat and straight and clear. The Ratnagiri light house and the famous Madavi beach of Ratnagiri city can be seen from Bhatye Beach.

Marine Biological Research Station
The Maharashtra Government under the Department of Fisheries established the Marine Biological Research Station (MBRS) in 1958 at Ratnagiri, which is presently attached with Dr. Balasaheb Sawant Konkan Krishi Vidyapeeth, Dapoli, Dist.: Ratnagiri. The research station has a 10 hectare area as field facility including a three storied building at main campus, a well equipped 'Aquarium and Museum', a modernised brackish water fish farm, a Mechanized Fishing and Research Vessel, Seed Production facilities and various laboratories at its disposal.
The Marine Biological Research Station, Ratnagiri is one of the premier institutes, especially in the South Konkan Coastal Fisheries Zone, having a mandate for development of fish production technologies, transferring the technologies to fish culturists, entrepreneurs and the industry, and generating professionally trained manpower in fish culture.
